Jeremiah 28:9
"The prophet which prophesieth of peace, when the word of the prophet shall come to pass, then shall the prophet be known, that the LORD hath truly sent him."

Problem:
Moslems assert that this is a prophecy of a specific prophet to come, a prophet that would prophesy peace. This, they say, is not Jesus because he did not come to bring peace (Luke 12:51-53). The word Islam can be interpreted to mean peace (it comes from the same root as Salaam) so Moslems claim that this prophet was to be the prophet that brought Islam, i.e. Muhammad.

Solution:
  1. To understand this prophecy it is important to look at the context. This is a confrontation between Jeremiah and Hananiah. Hananiah is the false prophet who prophesies peace and the end of Babylonian power.

  2. Jeremiah tells everyone that the prophet who prophesies peace is a false prophet because all the other prophets have prophesied war, evil or pestilence (v. 8). This point was already made more clearly in Jeremiah 14:13-14 where it is pointed out that only false prophets prophesy peace.

  3. The peace of Jeremiah 28:9 is not inner tranquillity. It is the absence of war, and this can be seen clearly from the context.

  4. Muhammad may have prophesied peace, but peace did not come. From the battle of Badr to the present day Islam has been involved in political conflict, both internally and externally. Therefore, by Jeremiah's test, Muhammad is a false prophet.
